A pristine slice of the Indian Ocean, Pemba Island offers lush green hills, world-class diving, vibrant coral reefs, and an untouched tropical escape — far from the crowds of Zanzibar.
Pemba Island is a lush, green island in the Zanzibar Archipelago known for its rolling hills, clove plantations, and untouched natural beauty. Far less developed than Zanzibar, it offers pristine beaches, rich coral reefs, and excellent diving and snorkeling. The island is also rich in Swahili culture and traditional village life, making it a peaceful and authentic tropical escape.
This is the most favorable period for visiting Pemba. Expect calm seas, clear skies, and outstanding underwater visibility, making it ideal for diving, snorkeling, and boat excursions. Sea temperatures remain warm at around 26–28 °C. From October, whale shark sightings begin to increase along the coast.
A rewarding period for marine encounters, especially whale shark sightings which peak around October and November. Short rains typically occur in November but rarely disrupt travel plans. The ocean remains generally calm and accessible, with warm temperatures between 27–32 °C. This season offers a quieter, more exclusive island experience.
This is the wettest period, with heavy monsoon rains and rougher sea conditions that can limit boat travel and diving activities. Some lodges reduce operations or close during April and May. Travel is generally not recommended, although March can still be suitable for flexible, budget-conscious travelers before peak rains set in.
