MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

Where elephants roam the open plains and lions watch from the savannah

OVERVIEW

Tanzania's most accessible big-game park on the Eastern Circuit, prized for its wide-open Mkata Floodplain, easy road access from Dar es Salaam, and consistently strong wildlife sightings.

Overview

Mikumi National Park covers about 3,230 km² and is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park, dominated by the open Mkata Floodplain — often likened to the Serengeti in miniature. Flanked by the Uluguru and Lumango mountain ranges, it sits on the Eastern Circuit just a few hours' drive from Dar es Salaam, making it the easiest full big-game safari to reach on short notice.

Wildlife

  • Prides of lions resting on the open plains
  • Large elephant herds across the floodplain
  • Hippos & crocodiles in the Mkata River pools
  • Giraffe, zebra, buffalo & wildebeest in big numbers
  • Over 400 recorded bird species

Activities

  • Game drives across the Mkata Floodplain
  • Birdwatching around the river & wetlands
  • Photography of lions, elephants & open savannah
  • Guided walking safaris
  • Scenic drives beneath the Uluguru Mountains
